Primary Food Lessons
We offer primary schools a scheme of work designed to give children the chance to experience new vegetables and fruits in a positive way. You can access a teacher training video and easy to use lesson plans and powerpoints, meaning in no time you’ll be ready to deliver TastEd lessons.
The scheme of work is fully funded for primary schools, all we ask is that you watch the short teacher training video first to get you started.
Our scheme of work is developed in collaboration with classroom teachers to ensure they are engaging for students as well as simple to use for teachers. Teachers that have used the programme report on how rewarding and simple the lessons are to use.
The scheme of work is cheap and easy (the main cost is buying the fruits and vegetables) and requires no cooking skills on the part of the teacher to deliver.
The lessons are:
- Simple to use;
- Designed to be picked up and delivered straight away;
- Closely tailored to the UK curriculum;
- Designed to be delivered in a classroom;
- Tailored to each year group of primary school;
- Engaging for students, featuring beautiful art designed by artist Annabel Lee.
TastEd and the curriculum
TastEd can make existing curriculum easier and more exciting to deliver. The Reception and Early Years lessons are designed to deliver core EYFS curriculum especially PSED, Communication and Language, Understanding the World and Health and Self Care. From Year 1 onwards a course of our lessons will cover the D & T Cooking and Nutrition curriculum as well as engaging children with literacy, especially writing. Each course of lessons includes some simple cooking activities in the final ‘Taste’ lessons. The lessons also make a great bridge to more advanced cooking if you have access to a teaching kitchen.
Benefits for students
The lessons make children more mindful around food and give them the space and self-confidence to talk about their likes and dislikes without feeling judged. For children who have experienced poor body image or disordered feelings around food, TastEd is a very nurturing and positive way to reconnect with the simple sensory pleasures of food. Through the two golden rules – no one has to like, no one has to try – the children learn important values such as mutual respect and boundaries.
